UofL STUDENTS STEP UP TO BE LIFESAVERS! Bone Marrow Drive Nets Twice the Original Goal
UofL’s Brown Cancer Center went into this week’s bone marrow drive with the goal of signing up 30 students from U of L’s diverse student population. The goal of adding 22 Caucasian, six African-American and two multi-racial students to the bone marrow registry, which helps match potential donors to people with leukemia and other cancers, was easily surpassed thanks to U of L student’s willingness to help!
A total of 66 students, including 48 Caucasian, nine African-American and nine others from multi-racial and other ethnic backgrounds came forward to add their names and health information to the bone marrow registry.
It is very important to the registry to get participants from all ethnicities and races, because if a cancer patient doesn’t have a related donor who is a good tissue match, their next best chance for a match comes from a donor of the same ethnic background. The participation of UofL’s students helps the registry more closely reflect the composition of the population of cancer patients that may need a bone marrow donor.
