Connie Sorrell, Associate Director, Director of the Kentucky Cancer Program
Connie Sorrell, M.P.H., has been a leader in cancer education and prevention for nearly two decades.
After serving for ten years at the state and local levels in the dental health field, Connie joined the Brown Cancer Center in 1991 as associate administrator of the Cancer Control and Education program. She was named director of the Kentucky Cancer Program at the Brown in 1994, and remained in that role until 2000, when she became the Brown Cancer Center’s associate director for community outreach.
Connie has been recognized for her outstanding work numerous times:
- Outstanding Cancer Control Service Awards, American Cancer Society (three-time winner)
- Special Recognition Award, National Black Leadership Initiative On Cancer, National Cancer Institute
- Outstanding Support and Dedication Award, Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer
- Essence of Women Award, University of Louisville
- Promise of One Award, Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Connie’s research in the several areas of cancer prevention and education, most notably tobacco cessation and breast care, is widely recognized and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals.
Connie holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, and an M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina.
